Insect collecting is a very popular hobby and many teachers assign it as a school project. There has long been a need for a means by which students and novice collectors can identify their specimens. The problem is that there are over one million known insects and exact classification requires professional training and an extensive library. Even then, professionals often have differences of opinion regarding classification.
This chart is an extremely valuable tool for the non-professional. It displays a unique branching system that permits insects to be classified to the order level. All orders are briefly but accurately described and are accompanied by many illustrations of the most common species. There is a large insect anatomy section as physical characteristics are based on anatomical features. There is also a section on other arthropods - animals that have an external skeleton but are not true insects. These include spiders, centipedes and crustaceans.
